(Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Jack Rieley)
Produced by Carl Wilson & Brian Wilson
——————————
Narrator – Jack Rieley
Voice of the Pied Piper – Brian Wilson
Cricket provided by John Roos
——————————
Incorporates:
MOUNT VERNON AND FAIRWAY (THEME)
I’M THE PIED PIPER
BETTER GET BACK IN BED
MAGIC TRANSISTOR RADIO
RADIO KING DOM
——————————
Other various short FAIRY TALE sections include rising and falling sounds for the magic transistor radio (organ, synths), radio tuning sound effects, an unused keyboard cue (multiple stacked pianos, electric piano, organ), and ‘wind’ sound effects (strummed piano strings, Moog white noise). The crickets, credited to John Roos (presumably the ‘handler’), were a single cricket overdubbed many times to sound like a backyard full of them, according to Carl.
——————————
RECORDED:
Circa June to September, 1972 – Baambrugge Centraal 2 Studio, Baambrugge, Utrecht, Netherlands / Engineer: Steve Moffitt / 2nd Engineer: Jon Parks
Circa late September to early October, 1972 – Village Recorders, Los Angeles / Engineers: Steve Moffitt, Rob Fraboni
(AFM contract for a session in Baambrugge is dated September 4, 1972 – date is questionable, as the group played a show in Michigan that day, but not necessarily impossible; Brian remained in the Netherlands after the others departed for tour August, and it was reported that Carl planned to return there to help him complete the fairy tale the following month. Marilyn and Diane, interviewed on Old Grey Whistle Test in early September, spoke of Brian currently being at the studio in Holland working on a ‘surprise’.)
